All MYP students (7th through 10th levels) will participate in group service activities as part of the curriculum throughout the year. These activities must be documented (photos, reflections, signed forms) accordingly. IB Diploma Program students will complete Creativity-Activity-Service (CAS) as outlined in the Alcuin School CAS Syllabus.
Middle School Students (7th and 8th), are required to perform community service as part of their grade-level requirements. The expectation is that students participate in activities with these Targeted Learning Outcomes in mind:
- Consider implications
- Develop new skills
- Engage with issues of global importance
- Increase awareness of your strengths and areas for growth
- Plan and initiate activities
- Show perseverance and commitment
- Undertake new challenges
- Work collaboratively with others
Each activity should focus on one of these Targeted Learning Outcomes so that by the end of the year, all these outcomes will have been completed. Activities that last longer than 6 hours (either on a single day or over a period of time) can have two Targeted Learning Outcomes. Typically, this can be completed through 15-20 hours of service. Activities completed with the Middle School, such as volunteering at the North Texas Food Bank, may be submitted towards the Targeted Learning Outcomes.
Students must enter the activity information and reflection into ManageBac. Students must also provide additional evidence of their participation – a completed service form, an email or a letter from the service supervision (with the same information as on the form) and a photo of the student at work – all to be entered into ManageBac under “reflections & evidence”.
Students who earn at least 50 service hours each academic year may apply for the Presidential Volunteer Services Awards. See www.presidentailserviceawards.gov for more information. Middle School students who do not complete the requirements for community service noted above will be expected to complete the requirement in the summer. The student’s year-end report will state “The student has not completed the service requirement for this grade level” and the report may be revised if and when the student does complete the service requirements within the extended time frame.
All Diploma Program CAS activities will be approved and documented using ManageBAC.
Documentation for self-initiated service activities includes evidence of investigation, preparation, action and reflection.
